When you’re shopping for your very first wig, naturally your focus will be on finding the style and brand that will fit and suit you best. At this point, wig accessories are likely to be the furthest thing from your mind. But if you don’t buy the right wig accessories at the same time, then that perfect wig won’t stay looking very perfect for long.
If you want to keep your wig looking salon fresh every time you wear it then you need to invest in some wig accessories. Here are the five most important wig accessories that every wig wearer should own:
- A Wig Stand or Styling Head
A decent wig is a huge financial investment, and you will want to keep your wig looking as great as possible for as long as possible. Because no one wears their wig 24/7 (and if you do then you shouldn’t) it is important to have somewhere to store it when you’re not wearing it. Enter the wig stand. A wig stand will safeguard the shape and structure of your wig – it will ensure that your hairpiece holds its shape and ensure that the style remains the same. You should never lay your wig flat if you want it to stay in top condition, so a wig stand is the natural alternative to this.
- A Wig Brush
Whilst your new wig may look and feel like your own hair, that doesn’t mean you can treat it as you would your natural hair. That means that you will need to replace your hair brush and hair styling accessories: this is particularly true if you usually use a plastic brush which would be very damaging to your new wig. Instead opt for a wooden or ceramic hair brush which has been specifically designed to be used on wigs, to ensure that it is gentle enough for use on your delicate wig fibers.
- Tapes and Adhesives
Once you’ve found your dream wig you’re going to want it to stay in place all day. Nobody wants to see their wig laying on the ground behind them when they start running for the bus! This is where wig tapes and adhesives come into play, and these are essential for all wig wearers. Be sure to choose a gentle and transparent tape so that it is never visible, and so that it is easy to remove at the end of the day.
- Wig Styling Products
Most of us like to mix up our hair styles a little now and again and, with the right wig, it is possible to style your hair up and down, or curl and straighten it just as you would with your natural hair. If you do decide to style your wig then it is important that you use the right products, such as hair sprays that can hold synthetic hair and that can also be easily removed with water.
You should also avoid heat treating your wig for an extended period of time. Human hair wigs and heat-compliant synthetic wigs can be heat treated. Regular synthetic wigs cannot be heat treated and you should avoid getting any heat near them – if you want to change the style of your synthetic wig then cold styling and the appropriate styling products will be the only way to do this without causing any damage to your wig.
- Wig Shampoo and Conditioners
This is one of the main reasons that people cause accidental damage to their wigs, and limit their lifespan. They use the wrong kind of shampoo and conditioners. It is important that you invest in a shampoo and conditioner that is designed specifically for use on a wig: regular shampoo will leave the fibers of your wig feeling dry, and will also strip it of is colour, which could leave you with a wig that is faded or stripy. The same rule is true of shampoos that claim to be formulated to be gentle or baby shampoos: these still aren’t of a good enough standard to use on your wig. If you only buy one accessory alongside your new wig, make sure that you buy a specialist wig shampoo and conditioner.
