Timeless, sturdy and naturally beautiful; real timber flooring is hard to beat. While this flooring option is a popular choice for homeowners in many different types of properties, the high costs of hardwood can put people off. If you want to add the natural appeal of your timber flooring to your home but without the expense, there are a number of attractive alternatives worth considering.
Laminate wood flooring
A wood effect laminate floor is the cheapest way to get the stylish look of timber in your home. It is much easier to fit than hardwood flooring and requires less maintenance. Laminate flooring can last for years without needing any more attention than regular cleaning, whereas real wood needs to be treated and regularly resealed in order to keep it looking its best. However while scratches can be sanded and polished out of wood, laminate flooring is more susceptible to damage as scratches cannot be easily rectified.
Engineered wood flooring
Cheaper than solid hardwood, engineered wood has grown in popularity over recent years as an alternative flooring option. These floorboards are made with a veneer of real wood bonded with layers of plywood, creating a hybrid product that looks and feels like authentic hardwood flooring but without the price tag. They are also cheaper and easier to fit than solid wood floorboards. This is the best option if you don’t want to compromise on the real feel of wood underfoot.
Wood effect tiles
The most durable and hardwearing choice of wood effect flooring has to be porcelain tiles. These are much sturdier than laminate or timber and can withstand plenty of use so are ideal for high traffic areas such as kitchens and hallways. Porcelain is easy to clean and requires minimum maintenance. Wood effect tiles also allow you to get the look of hardwood flooring in environments where real wood would be unsuitable, such as bathrooms and outside areas.
